Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen has completed his medical ahead of a season-long loan move to Coventry City, as reported by The Telegraph's Mark McGrath.

The teenage full-back spent last season on loan with Charlton Athletic, as The Addicks narrowly missed out on securing a play-off spot in May.

The Dutch-born defender scored once and assisted three goals in his 34 appearances for Charlton, starting 31 of those games and cementing a starting spot from early.

Spending time at the academies of Feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam, and PSV Eindhoven, Maatsen swapped The Netherlands for West London in 2018.

Continuing his progression with Chelsea during the 2018/19 campaign, Maatsen became a regular in the club's U18 side, and the following season, he featured regularly for the club's U23s in Premier League 2.

The young left-back has also featured 33 times for various age groups within the Netherland's youth set up thus far, scoring three goals in the process.

The verdict

This is a very exciting addition to Coventry's existing squad. Mark Robins tends to operate with wing-backs, which will give Maatsen lots of opportunities to get forward and support attacking moves.

The success that Sam McCallum has had in Coventry's colours in recent years will fill Chelsea and Maatsen himself with confidence.

McCallum, who like Maatsen is a young full-back at a Premier League club, has spent three successful seasons impressing the Midlands club with his marauding runs forward and defensive competence.

It is a step up for Maatsen, but he certainly has the ability to thrive within this Coventry side - a team who have recruited well thus far.
