McGrath, Smith, Watts: All the latest Wigan Athletic transfer news

It has been a rather quiet 2022 summer transfer window for Wigan Athletic so far.

Following their promotion from League One at the end of last season, the Latics have yet to add any senior players to their first-team squad.

That is something that will surely need to change if the club are to be competitive in the Championship next season, while interest will no doubt also emerge in some of their own squad after last season’s success.

In what year were Wigan formed?

So with that in mind, we’ve taken a look at all the latest Wigan transfer news to have emerged recently, right here.

Goodwin comments on McGrath links

Jamie McGrath only joined Wigan from St Mirren back in the January transfer window, but it seems as though there is interest in him once again.

The midfielder managed just two league appearances for the Latics during the second half of the campaign. He has now been linked with a move back to Scotland with Aberdeen, and Dons boss Jim Goodwin, who previously managed the 25-year-old at St Mirren, is seemingly not ruling out a deal.

Speaking about the possibility of a deal, Wigan Today quote Goodwin as admitting that McGrath would enhance his Aberdeen squad, and stating that while nothing has happened with regards to a deal yet, we would have to wait and see if that changes, before the window closes.

Smith a man in demand

Another player who could potentially be one his way out of Wigan this summer, is young midfielder Scott Smith.

The 21-year-old has so far made eight appearances for the Latics, all of which came in cup competitions last season, and it has since been reported by journalist Alan Nixon that League Two side Rochdale are keen to sign the Welshman on loan.

It is suggested that although Wigan boss Leam Richardson is a fan of the midfielder, a loan move could work best for all parties, providing the Latics can add to their own squad to cover for this potential departure.

Richardson makes signings admission

Despite the lack of activity there has been in terms of incomings in particular at Wigan so far, it seems there is a desire to change that behind the scenes sooner rather than later.

Speaking about the situation in terms of signings, Richardson confirmed to Wigan Today that the club are working towards adding more options to their squad, following the release of Gavin Massey, and departures of loan trio Kell Watts, Glen Rea and Tom Bayliss.

Indeed, Richardson suggested the club will need further depth if they are to compete in the Championship, and seemingly did not rule out an attempt to bring Newcastle centre back Watts to the club, admitting he is open to anything when asked about trying to re-sign the 22-year-old.
