McCarthy set to bolster Ipswich ranks with defender deal

Championship side Ipswich Town are on the verge of landing Brighton & Hove Albion defender Connor Goldson on loan, reports HITC.

The 24-year-old moved to the AMEX Stadium back in 2015 following a long association with Shrewsbury Town, for whom he made his senior debut back in 2011, and then went on to appear a further 119 times, netting eight goals in the process.

And he has since played 35 games for Chris Hughton’s Brighton, 24 of which came back in the 2015/16 season, but only five of which came last term as he had to undergo preventative heart surgery back in February.

And with Goldson back to full fitness but unlikely to force his way into Hughton’s Premier League team, it appears that he is set for a spell away from the AMEX Stadium, with recent reports suggesting that Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich are on the verge of securing his signature.

The Tractor Boys laboured to a lowly 16th place finish in the Championship last term but have made a fine start to this one, winning their first four games to sit joint top of the division, only to lose 2-0 at home to Fulham on Saturday.

Nonetheless, Ipswich boss McCarthy knows the demands of the second tier and how important it is to have options in every position, so bringing in Goldson makes complete sense ahead of the rest of the season.

It’s a deal which looks set to be completed by Thursday’s 11pm deadline.

The Verdict: Connor Goldson missed the last few months of last season after undergoing preventative heart surgery, having found ‘a possible risk factor’ during a screening.

And now the 24-year-old is back to full fitness and ready to return, although Brighton’s promotion and his lowly position in the pecking order means a loan spell would be more likely and perhaps beneficial to the defender.

And Suffolk appears to be his next destination with Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town, who have made a fine start to the new season as they seek to improve upon their 16th place finish last term.

The chance to play more regularly with the Tractor Boys is likely to have been of paramount importance to Goldson, in a move which appears to benefit all parties involved.
