Hull City are ready to offer a new contract to star striker Jarrod Bowen, according to Tigers' manager Grant McCann.

The news emerged during the Northern Irishman's pre-match press conference on Thursday, revealing that he expects Bowen to be offered a lucrative new deal in a bid to end speculation of his imminent departure.

“It’s difficult because he’s a top player, he really is,” McCann said, reported by Hull Live.

“I’m sure the club will sit down with Jarrod and put something to him.

“At the end of the day he’s a Hull City player this year and next. It’s down to Jarrod to sit down with the football club and arrange a new deal for himself."

Although the 22-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his current deal, the club possess the option to extend it for an extra year effectively means he has two years remaining.

Bowen was heavily linked with moves to the Premier League during the summer transfer window following an outstanding season under Nigel Adkins.

He netted 22 times in the second tier, and provided two more assists, as the Tigers flirted with the play-offs before eventually falling away.

This season has seen him score four times in the opening eight matches of the season with McCann's side sat comfortably in midtable.

They welcome Cardiff City to the KCom this weekend as they look to build on their impressive win away to Luton Town.

The verdict

It is worth a go, isn't it?

I suspect that Bowen will be eyeing a Premier League move sooner rather than later, however, and suspect that unless it has a reasonable release clause in it, he will not be signing a new deal.

That puts Hull in a tricky situation. Do they let the remainder of his deal run, with the hope of winning promotion in that time? Or do they cash in and take a huge sum that could seriously help improve the entire squad?
