Cardiff City have released out of contract trio Nicky Maynard, Kevin McNaughton and Danny Gabbidon as Russell Slade looks to have a massive overhaul after his side's poor Championship showing, Wales Online have confirmed.

Maynard has joined MK Dons on a one-year deal
Maynard is among those who have been released

That brings to an end the nine year stay of full-back McNaughton, who had made nearly 300 appearances for the Bluebirds.

Signed from Aberdeen in 2006 on a free transfer he was a consistent member of the promoted side of two seasons ago.

He failed to make the grade in the Premier League and subsequently moved on loan to Bolton and that was where he spent the majority of this campaign too.

Gabbidon had a much shorter stay after being brought to the club at the start of the season as a player-coach, but the 35-year-old Welsh international only managed two appearances before being told he was surplus to requirements.

The former West Ham and Crystal Palace man hopes to continue his career despite his age following offers from the United States namely Chicago Fire.

Finally, Maynard never really established himself following his move from West Ham after being plagued with injuries, and even after a brief stint in the team towards the end of the campaign he has been told he is no longer required.

Interest is expected to be high in Maynard who has a good goal scoring record at a number of clubs including Crewe Alexandra where he netted 32 times in 59 appearances.

This could be the first of many at Cardiff with boss Russell Slade far from happy with the performance this campaign and a massive overhaul is expected, with the manager also set to recall the players a week early from pre-season to improve the performance next campaign.
