Football League World’s Middlesbrough fan pundit Phil Wrightson has provided his verdict on the club's reported interest in Wolves defender Cameron John.

According to the Daily Mail, Boro are tracking the 20-year-old defender, who has been impressing on loan at Doncaster Rovers.

The North East club may face some competition in signing John, as Premier League clubs such as Crystal Palace and Leicester City are also understood to be interested.

However, Wrightson has suggested he doesn’t believe signing the defender should be high on the club’s list of priorities.

He explained: “Our defence is fairly well covered at the moment; our main summer signings were a left-back and a right-back (Anfernee Dijksteel and Marc Bola), we have Dael Fry and Dani Ayala as our first choice centre back pairing and, I may be in the minority here, but I think Ryan Shotton has improved and has done a good job covering Fry or Ayala when they have been ruled out.

“We also have George Friend who can play centre-back in an emergency, Jonny Howson has done a great job when asked to deputise at full-back and our young centre-back Nathan Wood is being courted by Premier League teams if reports are to be believed.

“I, therefore, think that we shouldn’t be targeting defenders in the transfer window and need to be focusing on adding to our attack.”

He added: “We aren’t scoring enough goals, or even creating enough chances come to that.

“When we conceded after two minutes on Saturday we had the full game to get back into it and yet barely looked like scoring.

“With Woodgate promising attacking football but not landing his attacking targets in the summer, goals have been hard to come by and so investing in a defence that is already well resourced may not be welcomed by the fans.”

Woodgate took charge of Boro in the summer but things have not started well for the 39-year-old and his side have won only twice in the league.

They currently sit 15th in the Championship, with nine points from eight games.
