Football League World's Middlesbrough fan pundit Phil Wrightson has suggested that the club should bring in an experienced coach to advise Jonathan Woodgate if Boro's poor form continues.

The Boro job is Woodgate's first as a manager and the 39-year-old has struggled since taking over in the summer.

Having won only twice, his side are 20th in the table as things stand–just two points above the relegation zone.

Things look as though they could be about to go from bad to worse for the Teessiders as they face a difficult run of fixtures over the next few weeks, with league leaders West Bromwich Albion, up-and-coming Huddersfield Town and Fulham, who have arguably the best squad in the division, their next three opponents.

With that in mind, it seems likely that Boro could drop into the relegation zone and Wrightson has suggested a change may need to be made if that happens.

He explained: "It's concerning that we have struggled to win in the fixtures we have had so far which have been against mid-table sides at best.

"If our form continues to be as poor, as is likely due to our fixtures imminently becoming more difficult, Steve Gibson may need to have a think about Woodgate’s future.

"I would welcome a repeat of when Terry Venables came to steady the ship by assisting Bryan Robson and secured us Premier League safety in 2001.

"I think Woodgate has a long-term vision for the club and may just need an experienced old hand alongside him to steady the ship and get us out of trouble. That would mean we could retain Woodgate to allow him to plan for our future."
