Max Bird issues Derby County message that Rams supporters will love

Derby County midfielder has praised Rams fans for the fantastic send off they gave the team last Saturday and their support this season.

A crowd just short of 30,000 filled Pride Park on the Championship’s final day, with the Rams losing 1-0 to Cardiff City on the day.

As a result of their 21 point deduction from the EFL this season, the Rams relegation fate was already sealed heading into the match.

Nevertheless, Bird took time to thank the Rams’ “12th man” this season.

“It was a tremendous send-off,” Bird told Derby County club media.

“I feel as though the fans have been the 12th man for us this season and they’ve helped us a lot in every single game, which I have said in previous interviews.”

“The game itself didn’t go how we wanted, but the send-off from the fans was fantastic.”

In his second season as a first team player, Bird made 42 Championship appearances this campaign.

His performances in those matches earned him the ‘Sammy Crooks Young Player of the Season’ award last week.

Reflecting on the season, despite the adversity Derby have faced, Bird said it had been his best season for a variety of reasons.

“It has been my best season so far, by a mile.” the midfielder continued.

“It has been special and not just because of the fans and the connection with them, but also the squad we’ve had and the way the older lads have been with us as younger players.”

Quiz: Which club did Derby County sign these 24 players from in the 2000s?

“It’s sad that the season has finished, you kind of want it to go on and keep playing with these lads.”

Bird added: “I always say to the other young lads, and the ones that have come through this season, to smile and enjoy the game.”

“It doesn’t seem two minutes since we won the Under-18 Premier League against Arsenal, but it is three years now. You have to cherish these moments, because they won’t last forever.”

Contracted to the club until 2024, Bird will look to help Derby climb back into the second-tier next season.

The Verdict

It is good of Max Bird to come out and give a special mention to the Derby County fans.

Despite the club already being relegated, they packed out Pride Park on Saturday and showed tremendous support for the players and staff – as they have done all season.

It has been testing times off the pitch for the club in the last 18 months,  and the way both the players, supporters, and staff have carried themselves has been exemplary.

For their sake, let’s hope the proposed Derby County takeover goes through sooner rather than later.
