Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino will recommend Nestor Lorenzo to Sheffield Wednesday as the Owls look to appoint a new manager, according to reports from The Sun.

The Owls are still on the lookout for a new manager with only a week to go until the start of the season, following the sudden departure of Steve Bruce to Newcastle United less than a fortnight ago.

Plenty of names have been linked with the vacant job at Hillsborough, with Gary Rowett, Chris Coleman and Daniel Stendel all being talked about over the last few weeks.

But it looks as if a surprising name could be about to enter the mix, with Spurs boss Pochettino set to recommend former Colombia assistant Lorenzo to Wednesday, with the latter believed to be keen on a job in England.

The 53-year-old spent the most of his playing career in Argentina, but also spent two seasons at Swindon Town between 1990 and 1992. He also made 13 appearances for the Argentina national side, before being a part of their coaching staff after retiring as a player.

It would certainly be an eyebrow-raising appointment, but with Pochettino once endorsing Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa, it could be a shrewd move for the Owls.

The verdict

This would certainly be a pretty left-field appointment if Wednesday went to appoint Lorenzo, but Pochettino normally knows what he is talking about so it remains to be seen what happens.

Wednesday and Spurs don't really have many links apart from loaning Josh Onomah last season, so where this link has come from, I am not so sure.

Is Lorenzo the right man for Wednesday? I think they could do far better in terms of Championship experience, but that doesn't always guarantee success.
