Nottingham Forest's Matty Cash has revealed that teammate Ben Watson has helped him to adjust to and excel at his new role as a right-back this season.

The 22-year-old has spent the majority of his career in central midfield but has been shifted back to right-back permanently by Sabri Lamouchi this term – a move that has worked to great effect.

He has made progress defensively and become a solid member of the back four but it is when bombing forward down the right that he looks his best.

Cash has scored three times and provided four assists in his 36 Championship appearances this term and looks a really exciting prospect.

Speaking to The Athletic, the Reds academy product revealed that Watson had been really important in helping him adjust to and excel in his new role.

He explained: “His knowledge of football is huge.

"He just knows the game so well. I have changed positions and he has helped me no end. He plays on the right side of central midfield, so is always close to me, telling me what to do during games. He just gives you good advice. He has been a great leader and a great example for me to follow.

“Ben has had a fantastic season. You listen to him when he talks because he is a leader."

Cash has 135 Forest appearances to his name already but you feel this could be a pivotal summer for the 22-year-old.

AC Milan and West Ham United were reportedly interested in signing him in January and you feel that there is likely to be more suitors this summer.

Forest look on course to secure a play-off place this term but if they're unable to seal promotion, they may struggle to hold onto the 22-year-old.

The Verdict

This is exactly the sort of thing you'd hope an experienced player like Watson would look to do but he deserves a lot of credit for it.

It cannot have been easy for Cash to change positions this term but he's been fantastic at right-back, and it seems the advice from his teammate has been key.

Watson will no doubt be hoping that he still has the chance to play alongside Cash next season.
