Matt Smith has lauded Jed Wallace as Millwall's 'maverick' - and admitted that the club are lucky to have a player of his quality.

Wallace, named as the Lions' Player of the Year last term, was one of the standout attacking players in the Championship last term, scoring 10 league goals and adding an impressive 13 assists.

The winger has started this campaign in similar fashion, netting three goals in five league games, including the equaliser at Wycombe on Saturday from the penalty spot as the Lions came from behind to claim all three points.

Smith was also influential on his first league start of the campaign, winning the penalty at Adams Park which came from a teasing Wallace delivery, before assisting Ryan Leonard's spectacular winner to complete the comeback.

The former Queens Park Rangers frontman was asked about Wallace's contribution to this Millwall side and was full of praise for his Lions teammate.

Smith told Millwall's official club website: "Jed is our maverick. Every team that I've played in, you've always had that maverick that is capable of unlocking the door or producing that bit of magic.

"Great composure to tuck away the penalty and I thought he was a constant threat, particularly down that right-hand side, he had the beating of his man and was putting in good balls.

"We are lucky to have a player of his quality and hopefully long may that continue."

The Verdict

Hearing Smith speak to highly of Wallace shouldn't come as much of a surprise anymore. It's common knowledge now that Wallace is Millwall's main man.

Whether it's goals, assists or set-pieces, everything the Lions produce in an attacking sense comes through Wallace, so it's no wonder Smith admitted that they're fortunate to have him.

If Gary Rowett's men want to go one better than last season and finish inside the top-six, then there's a huge amount of pressure on Wallace's shoulders to continue providing that attacking spark.
