Matt Penney has sent a message to everyone at Sheffield Wednesday ahead of his departure from the club.
The 23-year-old has been at Hillsborough for 15 years, having first joined as a youth player in 2006, but is set to become a free agent when his current contract expires this summer.
Wednesday were relegated from the Championship earlier this month and last week they confirmed that 10 players in their senior squad will be leaving at the end of their current deals, including Penney.
The defender’s contract is set to expire on the 1st of July and he took to Twitter today to send a message to his boyhood club.
The end of an era, I just want to say a big thankyou to everyone @swfc.. staff, players and fans thats helped & supported me over the years, I wish the club all the best for the future!💙✌🏼 pic.twitter.com/YE5GpHiAGz

The left-back was little more than a bit-part player at Wednesday in the 2020/21 campaign – making 15 appearances for the Owls.
Penney seemed to have cemented a place in the starting XI in the early part of 2021 but fell out of favour after the arrival of Darren Moore, not featuring at all since the 6th of March.
He leaves Hillsborough with 32 appearances for the Owls but it seems he does have suitors in the Championship, with QPR reportedly interested.
What club do these 21 former Sheffield Wednesday players ply their trade at now?
These comments are likely to draw a mixed reaction from fans of the Yorkshire club, with some wishing him well and others gutted to see Penney leave.
Though the 23-year-off fell out of favour after the arrival of Moore, it’s still a surprise to see Wednesday release a promising young defender.
They’ll likely be worried that Penney is going to thrive elsewhere in the EFL and a fresh start could be just what he needs.
It’s going to be interesting to see what the future holds for him.
