Nottingham Forest's recruitment has been highlighted as the reason why they are struggling in the Championship this season by former defender, Matt Mills.

Mills, who played for Forest between 2015 and 2018, has dived into an in-depth Q&A session on his personal Instagram account this morning, where questions regarding Forest naturally popped up.

There, the centre-back revealed he felt the club's recruitment in the summer had been poor after losing key players, whilst also noting that the Reds have had to contend with injury issues too.

Sabri Lamouchi lost Matty Cash in the summer transfer window, with the right-back heading to Aston Villa. Forest also failed to retain last year's mainstay midfielder, Ben Watson, with Tiago Silva leaving as well.

In terms of injuries, the Reds have had to juggle the loss of Joe Worrall and Lewis Grabban, although the former returned last time out against Watford to help Forest to a goalless draw.

Quiz: Which club did Nottingham Forest sign each of these 25 players from?

Chris Hughton is now in-charge at the City Ground, with Forest hovering narrowly outside the Championship's relegation zone after 15 fixtures.

Today, the Reds take on Reading at the Madejski Stadium, looking to turn the table on its head to claim a top-six scalp.

The Verdict

It's hard to disagree with what Mills is saying.

Cash speaks for himself. He's a top player and whilst Forest have tried to replace him, they've not quite got it in terms of quality.

The interesting one for me is how much Forest appear to be missing Ben Watson.

He was so good for them in the midfield last season and whenever I've seen them play this year, that has been the area they have struggled in.

Of course, injury issues have not helped, but recruitment has been something of a scattergun approach, which has never worked for the club.
