Reading defender Matt Miazga has said that tonight's FA Cup fifth round clash with Sheffield United is of huge 'importance' to the team, as the Royals look to book their place in the quarter-finals.

The 24-year-old central defender made his long-awaited return on Saturday against Barnsley from the ankle injury that has kept him out for the last six weeks, featuring for the full ninety minutes in the 2-0 win.

Ironically, the issue was suffered in Reading's fourth round FA Cup replay against Cardiff City at the end of January.

Now that he is back fit for his side, the American wants to help them advance to the next round.

"I know the importance of cup competitions," Miazga told the club website.

"It’s a perfect way to win games and potentially win some trophies.

Speaking about Reading's upcoming opponents, the 24-year-old said that the experience of coming up against them last season in the Championship can stand his side in good stead.

"They’re in a great position in the Premier League, we played them last year, so we know what they’re about," Miazga added.

"But anything can happen, it’s the FA Cup Fifth Round - it’s one game so we’re going to give it our all. We want to advance and that should be our mentality, 100% and go for it."

The defender also wants the Royals supporters to play their part in getting the team over the line this evening.

"Hopefully, we can get even more fans cheering, get Madejski Stadium filled out - and we’ll give it a good go and try to get through to the next round!"

"They’re always cheering, they see the intent and the effort, and they’ll always applaud the effort, so we just need to do the same," he added.

The Verdict

Miazga's return to the fold against Barnsley was a big boost to the side, and the Royals fans will be hoping that the 24-year-old is in line to feature this evening.

Although Reading have the advantage of knowing exactly how Chris Wilder's side like to play, the Royals have a poor record against Sheffield United the has stretched over the last decade.

The Berkshire side have won just one of their ten games against the Blades in all competitions.

Royals fans will not want to be reminded, but Reading suffered a 4-0 defeat to the Yorkshire side when the teams last met in February of last year.
