Reading defender Matt Miazga has insisted that his side's dramatic 1-0 victory over Preston will count for nothing if they cannot follow it up with a win against QPR tonight.

Miazga was on target in the 98th minute for the Royals as they clinched a last-gasp win during Mark Bowen's first game in charge of the club after taking over from Jose Gomes earlier that week.

Gomes was dismissed by the club following the 1-0 defeat to Bristol City before the international break which meant the Royals had failed to win in their last six league outings.

The club replaced the Portuguese with Bowen, who was previously holding the Sporting Director role at the Madejski Stadium, and Miazga's late strike sealed an excellent start to the Welshman's managerial tenure.

Speaking to the Reading Chronicle, the defender has hailed the importance of the victory following a barren run, but he also emphasised that the side have now quickly switched their attention to the QPR match.

“It was important for the club to get back to winning ways," he said.

“We know our qualities and if we can put in these kinds of performances with the right energy or intensity then I don’t see many, if any clubs beating us at home. If we continue putting in that grit I think it will be a good season and we’ll push up the table.

“But for now the main focus is QPR. The win against Preston doesn’t matter if we can’t follow it up."

Miazga has made seven appearances at the centre of Reading's defence this season after joining the club on a second loan spell over the summer.

The Verdict

This was an impressive and much-needed victory for Reading, but Miazga is correct in that it will quickly be forgotten if they fail to follow up the result with another good performance against QPR this evening.

Bowen certainly still has his doubters at the club despite the victory in his first match, but it would be a real statement victory if they can achieve success against an in-form QPR side.

Reading are still languishing at 20th in the Championship table despite the positive result against Preston, so they now need to assemble a run of victories in order to start climbing the table.
