Swansea's Matt Grimes says his penalty in Saturday's FA Cup quarter final defeat to Manchester City was a "weight off his shoulders" after it ended a long run without scoring for the midfielder.

Grimes stepped up to rifle the ball past Ederson, and though Bersant Celina doubled the Jacks' lead ten minutes later with a stunning finish to a brilliant team move, two controversial second half goals helped Pep Guardiola's quadruple chasers into the semi finals with a 3-2 win.

Speaking to the club's official website about his goal, Grimes revealed his relief at getting on the scoresheet for the first time since a League Cup tie with York City in August 2015, saying: "On a personal note, it was a little bit of a weight off my shoulders to get my first goal of the season to be honest."

The 23-year-old also admitted that part of that relief was down to some of the comments from his Swans team mates, adding: "I’ve been getting some stick from my team-mates, so I knew I had to get on the scoresheet soon. So I’m happy the goal has finally come."

Reflecting on the outcome of the game, Grimes went on to say: "Obviously I would rather it had come in a victory, but we showed what we are capable of against one of the really top teams."

The verdict

Given the confidence with which Grimes took that penalty against one of the country's highest rated goalkeepers, you wouldn't have thought it was his first goal in three and a half years.

A regular feature in Graham Potter's side this season - for the first time in Swansea colours, Grimes has plenty to contribute other than goal scoring, though if he does start to find the net more frequently, he could become a fairly well rounded asset at the Liberty Stadium.
