Swansea City have made an astonishing start to the Championship season under new manager Steve Cooper.

After their 1-0 victory over Leeds United at the weekend, the Swans currently sit top of the Championship table with five wins from their opening six matches.

Swansea finished tenth in the Championship table under Graham Potter last season, but he left the club to take charge of Brighton during the summer.

England Under-17 World Cup-winning manager Cooper was appointed as Swansea's new head coach this summer and the Welshman has been able to guide the club to their best-ever start to a league campaign.

Swansea captain Matt Grimes has praised the winning mentality Cooper has brought to the team since his arrival at the Liberty Stadium.

“The head coach coming in has made a big difference. Since the first week of pre-season, he has installed a winning mentality in the group. Maybe we didn’t have that so much last year,” Grimes told Swansea's club website.

“We know that our team-mates are besides us and will fight tooth and nail to give us the best chance of winning the game. Everyone knows their job and is pulling the club in the right direction.

“At the moment, our team spirit is unbelievable and the connection with the fans is of a different class. We just need to keep building on that.”

Grimes was chosen by Cooper as Swansea's new club captain before the start of the current campaign and the midfielder has started all six of their Championship matches so far this season.

Swansea will be looking to continue their momentum when they face Nottingham Forest at the Liberty Stadium after the international break.

The Verdict

Swansea have made a remarkable start to the new season and I think they've got to be considered genuine promotion contenders after their recent win at Leeds.

Cooper has done a fantastic job since he took charge at Swansea this summer and he deserves tremendous credit for the way he's been able to get the best out of the players, especially when you consider that he's never managed at this level before.

Swansea's start is even more impressive when you consider that they've lost two of their most influential players from last season in Oli McBurnie and Daniel James.

It'll be interesting to see if they're able to continue their momentum after the international break.
