Wolves wing-back Matt Doherty has heaped praise on manager Nuno Espirito Santo after the club's fantastic season that saw them lift the Championship trophy on Saturday.

The ex-Porto boss joined in the summer with many questioning whether he would have what it takes to succeed in one of the most competitive divisions in world football.

However, Santo's Wolves have ran away with it, with the team flourishing in the 3-4-3 formation he decided to use.

Ireland international Doherty has been key to that and revealed just how much he appreciates the work the manager has done.

"The manager's been the difference. The formation, his tactics, man management...everything about him is world class," he told the Express & Star.

"Now that I know him I'm not surprised he got us up in his first season. Credit to the manager, everyone's gelled, the formation, it's all clicked into place. It's meant to be."

Wanderers can hit the 100-point mark on Sunday if they get a draw at bottom of the table Sunderland to cap off a fine season.

The Verdict

Santo was clear with what he wanted to do as soon as he joined and set about creating a formation and drilling the players so it would work.

That paid off straight away and Wolves have looked a level above the rest of the Championship all season.

Of course, the recruitment has helped and they do have real quality in the side but that shouldn't take away from the work Santo has done, with Doherty among the players previously at the club who have improved significantly under the former Valencia boss.
