Plymouth Argyle will be hoping to mount another push for the top-six in League One, following last season's near-miss of the play-off places.

With Steven Schumacher taking charge at Home Park midway through the campaign, the former assistant now has his first full summer to try and assemble a squad that can challenge at the top-end of the division.

Adding one player to the squad thus far in the form of Matt Butcher, the Pilgrims will be eager to secure deals as early as possible before the new campaign gets underway at the end of July.

With interest likely to continue surfacing in some of the club's most integral first-teamers, it is set to be a busy summer in what remains.

Here, we take a look at Plymouth's options as things stand and assemble what is possibly their best starting XI as the new season approaches...

One of the players who could continue to see lots of interest coming his way is goalkeeper Michael Cooper, with the 22-year-old enjoying a mighty impressive campaign in-between the sticks at Home Park, and given his importance, he is undoubtedly the numbering option as things stand.

Seeing lots of minutes together as a trio last season, Dan Scarr, Macaulay Gillesphey and James Wilson seem to be the likely three who will begin the 2022/23 campaign if no new additions are made.

Brendan Galloway would be an ideal candidate for the left-sided centre-back role, however, it remains to be seen how he is progressing with his long-term injury.

Similar to the central defensive situation, the wing-backs are likely to be the pair who regularly featured last time out, with Joe Edwards and Conor Grant likely to start.

With Ryan Broom heading back to Peterborough United, and with the future of Panutche Camara likely to be away from Home Park, the first and only summer signing thus far, Matt Butcher, could be deployed next to Jordan Houghton, with Danny Mayor playing slightly advanced.

Up top, there remains to be good options, however, Niall Ennis and Ryan Hardie are the likely pair, although Luke Jephcott would be pushing hard for inclusion.
