Derby County striker Matej Vydra believes that last season was the best he has played in his career so far.

The Czech Republic international scored 21 goals as well as assisting four in 40 league games last season.

He joined the Rams back in 2016 from Watford for around £8 million, but struggled to make his mark with a return of 5 goals in 33 games.

However, Rowett has played him in a free role just behind the centre forward and it has worked wonders because he has thrived in the space that opens up in those areas once the forward draws the attention of the defenders.

Here's what Vydra had to say to RamsTV about his season: "Last year, nobody really knew about me but I have tried to do my best all season and I think that it has become the best season of my career so far."

"Last season wasn’t my best and I said that I have to be better and show my best performances."

"I’ve never won the golden boot before, but it’s not about my statistics, I always want the team to win and if I can score then it is amazing for me."

The Verdict

Vydra had a stunning season as he finished top goalscorer in the league and helped propel the Rams into the play-offs.

However, that comes at Derby's peril because other teams are likely to be interested in him, so the inability to achieve promotion may have cost them.

He has struggled in spells with other English clubs as well as his first season with Derby, but he has now backed up the potential that could be seen earlier in his career with a strong season in front of goal.
