Morecambe midfielder Toumani Diagouraga has spoken about the spirit of the team, who came from 3-0 behind at half-time to beat bottom of the league Doncaster Rovers 4-3 at the Globe Arena.

Sunday brought a stunning game in Sky Bet League One as a battle at the bottom conjured up 7 goals. Rovers, currently sat rock bottom, were 3-0 up after half an hour courtesy of goals from Aidan Barlow, Dan Gardner and Joseph Olowu.

At half-time, the “as it stands” showed that Morecambe were sat just inside the relegation zone in 21st on 20 points, 2 points a drift of safety, with Doncaster hot on their tails just a point behind them. By the 90th minute the Stephen Robinson’s men were in 19th a point clear of the relegation zone and 7 clear of Donny.

A spirited second half comeback with a brace from Cole Stockton, who is joint top scorer in League One, Jonathan Obika and the winner on 85 minutes with a fierce strike from Diagouraga gave the home side all 3 points. Notably, this is the first time this season Morecambe have came from behind to win.

The central midfielder who has featured in 21 out of 24 league game this season said that this result “shows the character we’ve got in this team, and it would have been easy to lay down at half-time and get beat, via the club’s official channels.

The 34-year-old added “The way in which we won the game today, hopefully it’s a turning point and we can use that to really look forward up the league and try and climb up the table.”

The Verdict

This result is huge for Morecambe, who have been pulled into a relegation scrap in their first season in the third-tier.  In this tight schedule in the winter period, made even tighter with Covid postponements, results are incredibly more significant for survival.

Morecambe visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday to face Antonio Conte’s side in the FA Cup 3rd round, the team and fans will be expecting to come away with no result, but games like this are what gives teams belief they can go on and produce an upset.
