Dean Smith's Walsall have leapfrogged Burton Albion and taken over the top spot in Sky Bet League One following a 2-0 win over the Brewers yesterday.

Can Dean Smith lead Walsall to promotion this season?

After some decent early play from Burton Albion, Walsall found their footing and Romaine Sawyers tested Jon McLaughlin with a powerful drilled shot from distance, but only after the Burton keeper had got down well to deny Reece Flanagan.

The 19-year-old prospect Liam Kinsella capped of a solid performance with a well-deserved goal, after he latched onto a Sawyers pass to drill low past McLaughlin, and give the hosts the lead nine minutes before half time.

Burton responded well but could trouble the Walsall defence, who've only conceded six goals so far this season - the fewest in the division, meaning Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's side went in behind at the break.

Burton continued to throw men forward to go in search of an equaliser in this crucial clash, but all the pressing left them exposed at the back and, with hopes of an equaliser slipping away, Walsall broke and John Mousinho handled the ball in the area, giving Tom Bradshaw the chance to seal all three points for the Saddlers.

The young forward tucked it away to help himself to a sixth goal of the season, and an important one in Walsall's push for promotion.

Victory for the home side, their seventh of the season, lifts them above the Brewers on goal difference, yet a third defeat of the season was not enough to see Burton fall out of the top two.
