Steve Bruce's Hull City have kept pace with the promotion race after a solid 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground yesterday.

Dougie Freedman's Nottingham Forest have won just two of their last eight league matches

Forest started off the game brightly and almost took the lead when visiting keeper Alan McGregor did well to tip wide a Nelson Oliviera strike from outside the box - one that looked destined for the back of the net.

Mohamed Diame almost gave Hull the lead soon after but his long range shot was deflected onto the crossbar, leaving Dorus De Vries powerless to almost watch the opener.

Hull had the perfect chance to take the lead when Matt Mills took down Shaun Maloney in the box and, much to the dismay of the home support, the referee pointed to the spot.

Abel Hernandez however was foiled from the spot with De Vries guessing right to keep the score level.

Hernandez did atone for his penalty miss and get his goal on the stroke of half time when the whole Forest defence missed Maloney's corner, and the Uruguayan finished on the line, giving Hull the lead.

Michael Dawson was foiled in the second half, after he forced De Vries to pull out a low save to tip his shot wide.

Jamie Ward could have earned Forest a point but McGregor parried away his powerful strike, but the game was over when Mills brought down Chuba Akpom, earning him a straight red card.

The victory for Hull leaves them in fifth place, level on points with Reading, Birmingham City and Burnley - all four make up the Play-off positions.

Meanwhile, Dougie Freedman's Forest look uninspiring, and are languishing in 13th place, six points off the top six.
