Fleetwood however, started the game the better of the two sides and took the lead inside the first 12 minutes thanks to a goal from Bobby Grant who finished from close range.

Gillingham soon got themselves back on level terms, when six minutes later Rory Donnelly finished well inside the box, latching onto a Max Ehmer ball to put the Gills level.

Not long after, Gillingham were in front, with Jordan Houghton heading home a Ryan Jackson cross making it 2-1. From here on, Gillingham looked comfortable and they added a third three minutes later with John Egan firing past the keeper to give a convincing lead.

It didn’t take long for Gillingham to extend that lead even further with Rory Donnelly adding his second of the game with an excellent chip over the keeper, sealing the game off before half time.

Both sides had a few odd chances in the second half but Fleetwood never looked like mounting a comeback and Gillingham completed the humiliation with a fifth goal in the dying minutes with Cody MacDonald finishing well to put the game to bed.

Justin Edinburgh has done an impressive job so far at Gillingham and with performances like these, he could be lifting them into the Championship soon.
