David Flitcroft's Bury have risen to third place in Sky Bet League One after a Leon Clarke goal gave them a 1-0 win over in-form Colchester United at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

David Flitcroft's Bury are now unbeaten in their last 17 away games after victory at Colchester

The hosts had some good chances to take the lead in the first half, with Joe Edwards striking a long-distance pile-driver that looked to be headed for the back of the net before Shakers goalkeeper Rob Lainton pulled out a fine stop.

Chris Hussey struck the crossbar with his free-kick late in the first half but the sides went into the break level, both feeling they were unlucky not to be leading.

Tony Humes' side came out the better of the two after the break, with Lainton in hot form in the Shakers net, foiling shots from Marvin Sordell, George Moncur and then Gavin Massey.

Then Colchester had a penalty claim for handball denied before top scorer Clarke rose highest to turn in a Joe Riley cross to give the Shakers a win and propel them to third place in the table.

Victory was a sixth on the bounce for Flitcroft's men, who have adapted to life in the third tier admirably following promotion from League Two last season. Staggeringly, they haven't tasted defeat in any of their last 17 away matches.

Defeat for the hosts, their first of the season at home, ended an impressive run of five straight victories, and leaves the U's tenth in the table.
