Steve Evans' Rotherham United side picked up their first three points of the Sky Bet Championship season as a winner in the third minute of injury time saw them beat Cardiff City 2-1 at the New York Stadium.

Steve Evans' side picked up their first win of the season against Cardiff City yesterday, although remain bottom of the table

The key turning point in the match came just past the 40th minute mark when Bluebirds goalkeeper David Marshall was sent off for a kick-out on Rotherham striker Matt Derbyshire, allowing Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe to slot home from the resulting spot-kick.

However, deep into first half injury time, Peter Whittingham stepped up and slotted home from the penalty spot, after Farrend Rawson brought down ex-Manchester United full back Fabio in the box.

The Millers went into half time with a point in their grasp and came out of the blocks flying in the second half, piling pressure on the Cardiff back line and dominating the midfield, making full use of the extra man.

Cardiff, however, repelled attack after attack and looked set to be rewarded with a point for their troubles before Chris Maguire, on off the bench, drilled in a low cross which was inadvertently turned in by Matt Connolly, who sent his own keeper the wrong way.

Undeniably, if one side deserved three points, it was the Millers and, despite picking up their first victory of the season, they remain rooted to the foot of the table and will need to carry this momentum on if they are to remain a Championship team this time next year.
