Huddersfield Town and Blackburn Rovers had to share the spoils in a rather entertaining goalless draw at Ewood Park this afternoon. 

Jordan Rhodes missed a penalty as wasteful Rovers had to settle for a point, which means they now go in to the international break without a win in three matches.

The Scotland international had scored five goals in four games against his former club since his £8m move to the Blackburn in August 2012 but he was unable to mark his 100th league appearance for Rovers with another as he missed from the spot on the hour mark.

Huddersfield had chances themselves and could have snatched the victory late on but the draw means Chris Powell's side have taken seven points from the last three matches, two of which have been away from home.

Nahki Wells was recalled to that starting line-up for the injured Jonathan Hogg in the only change from the 3-1 win over Wolves on Wednesday night.

Blackburn were without eight first-team players which forced boss Gary Bowyer to play winger Ben Marshall at right-back. Former Manchester United trainee Joshua King partnered Rhodes in the Rovers attack.

It was the Terriers who were the quicker out of the traps and were close to going in front but Markus Olsson denied Wells a certain goal on seven minutes after Jack Robinson made a surging run down the left flank.

Tom Cairney had earlier put a free-kick over the bar before Marshall tested Smithies from distance, which the goalkeeper had to gather at the second attempted before King could pounce.

King's pace was causing problems and Rovers went close on 27 minutes when the striker set up Cairney on the counter but the midfielder dragged his shot narrowly wide.

King himself should have done better with a header from Rhodes' cross and then Hanley connected with a diving header from Conway's corner only to see the ball fly wide of the goal.

Rovers continued the pressure into the second half with Marshall finding King with a pinpoint cross but the striker's looping header landed on the roof of the net.

The home side were handed a golden chance to take the lead on 61 minutes when Grant Holt, who had earlier been booked, was ruled to have handled Craig Conway's cross into the box.

But given his good record from the spot, Rhodes squandered the gift by firing wide.

The striker had a chance to make up for it moments later but was denied smartly by Smithies with Mark Hudson sweeping up the danger to deny King from tapping the ball into the empty net.

The Town goalkeeper then pulled off an excellent save to deny Lee Williamson and then Conway fired a shot inches past the post after cutting inside.

With 14 minutes left Cairney put King through on goal and the Norwegian managed to hold off Hudson but he could not beat Smithies, who blocked the shot with his legs.

Some would argue Town rode their luck but the Terriers finished the stronger.

Jacob Butterfield hit a long range effort that wasn't far off target before Jason Steele couldn't hold Harry Bunn's shot from distance but Hanley was in the right place to clear before Wells could pounce on the loose ball.

Wells wasted a glorious chance towards the end to grab all three points for Town but the striker failed to find the target from Bunn's cross.

The Bermudan striker also saw his deflected shot fly into the side netting with the full-time whistle looming.
