Sky Bet League One's basement side Crewe Alexandra take on third place Gillingham this afternoon, with the hosts hoping to get out of the bottom four with victory.

Crewe manager Steve Davis thought his side deserved something from their defeat to Chesterfield yesterday
Steve Davis's Crewe will hope to get out of the bottom four when they host Gillingham this afternoon (3pm kick-off)

The Railwaymen have had a slow start to the season, and have picked up just nine points from their opening 12 games. This leaves them bottom of the table, which makes for pretty grim reading if you are a Crewe fan.

Even though it's still early days in the season, Crewe manager Steve Davis cannot afford to drop many more points, especially at home. They go into the game as major underdogs, however there is no reason why they can't build on last week's impressive 2-1 win at Barnsley and cause a shock.

Gillingham, on the other hand, are currently third in the table, having won seven of their first 12 games, including two of their last three. They are the division's top scorers, having netted 25 times already this season - almost double the amount that Crewe have scored.

A win for Justin Edinburgh's side could propel them to top spot if other results go their way, which would leave them in a fantastic position to capitalize on the other teams around them, and mount a serious promotion charge.

In the past six outings between these clubs in recent times, Gillingham have come out on top on three occasions. However, in their most recent meeting, Crewe run riot with a 3-1 victory, so it all combines to set-up a fascinating encounter at Gresty Road this afternoon.
