The Blues are ninth in the Championship following a win and two draws from their opening three matches, while the Gills top League One after three wins and a draw.

Gary Rowett's Birmingham have drawn their last two matches after seeing leads disappear, as was the case in their all-Midlands clash with Derby County in their 1-1 stalemate on Friday.

The 2011 winners overcame League Two side Bristol Rovers in the first round of this competition, thanks to Andrew Shinnie's sweetly struck winner at the Memorial Stadium.

Gillingham also beat fourth-tier opposition in Plymouth Argyle to set up this clash, after Bradley Dack and Jake Hessenthaler scored in the last five minutes to complete the turnaround having gone a goal down.

Dack has been Justin Edinburgh's man of the moment in what has been a blistering start to the season for the club from Kent.

He took his goal tally to four when he netted a brace in the 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic on Saturday, and will be hoping to inspire his side to their first ever win over Birmingham in nine attempts.

The two teams last met in the second tier in 2001 when they played out a 1-1 draw at Priestfield.

Interestingly, almost 18 years ago to the day, they faced off at St. Andrew's in the second leg of their first-round clash in this competition, with the Blues winning 3-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate.
