Gillingham travel to Oakwell to take on Barnsley this afternoon in an attempt to redeem themselves from last weekend’s defeat to Colchester United, and regain the fine form that they found at the start of the campaign.
Following a steady start to the season, Barnsley will not make this easy for the visitors and will be keen to progress themselves from their current mid-table position.
The hosts have won three of their eight league matches this season but only one of their last five, yet they know victory over Justin Edinburgh’s side this afternoon could propel them into the play-off places.
Tykes boss Lee Johnson told the official website: ‘They’ve had a good start, and it’s another classic case of a group that’s been together a while, they know each other’s individual games, been solid and have scored a few goals.
‘They are a good side and have Bradley Dack who I really like as a player, Cody McDonald is good at this level and Luke Norris has been doing well. But we are at home and we are going to take the game to them.’
Johnson will be hoping on-loan Arsenal midfielder Dan Crowley will be fit for the fixture after missing two games due to a thigh injury. Striker Michael Smith is also looking for his first start since arriving at the club on loan from Swindon Town.
Gillingham are carrying no new injuries, however Adedeji Oshilaja will remain out of the squad for five or six more days with a knee injury.
Edinburgh’s side are third in the League One table after five wins from their opening eight matches, although lost for the first time this season against Colchester last time out.
Gills boss Edinburgh told the official website: ‘It’s always a tough game up there whenever I have played but it will be the first time I have taken a team to manage there. I expect a tough encounter but we will be fully focused and determined to get back on track.’
It should be an interesting clash at Oakwell this afternoon, with Gillingham knowing that a win could take them to the top of the division.
