Barnsley slipped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Derby County last night but many fans of the Yorkshire club have been full of praise for 20-year-old Elliot Simoes.

The winger came off the bench to replace Mike Bahre in a tactical move in just the 26th minute and produced an impressive performance for the Tykes, including adding his first goal for the club.

Jack Marriott gave Derby the lead just before the half at Pride Park, latching onto Wayne Rooney's whipped in free-kick and turning it into the bottom corner.

Barnsley pulled themselves level five minutes after the break when Simoes acted fastest and poked the ball into the back net after Ben Hamer had fumbled Conor Chaplin's shot.

The game didn't stay level for long, however, as Martyn Waghorn converted Andre Wisdom's low cross in what would prove the decisive goal seven minutes later.

Barnsley remain down in the relegation zone but the performance of Simoes should be a huge positive for Gerhard Struber.

The 20-year-old arrived at Oakwell in January 2019, joining from Northern Premier side FC United of Manchester, and has made three appearances in total.

Prior to arriving at the North West club, he developed through the academies of Portuguese giants Benfica and Sporting Lisbon.

He appears to have impressed the Barnsley fans, with many taking to Twitter to heap praise on the winger.
