Sunderland are hoping for a long and success era under Lee Johnson.

The Bristol City manager took charge of the club on Saturday and even led the team through the clash with Wigan Athletic just hours after being appointed.

While that result didn’t go their way, there was fresh hopes of picking up a positive result against Oldham Athletic in the Papa Johns Trophy.

Thankfully for supporter, that victory did come at Boundary Park.

Despite going behind, goals from Chris Maguire and Josh Scowen were enough to see Sunderland progress from the second round of the competition to ensure that their hopes of going all the way remain intact.

Admittedly, the Papa Johns Trophy is certainly not at the top of the club’s list of priorities this term, with everyone firmly focused on securing promotion to the Championship.

That said, a victory like this will do wonders for confidence within the squad.

Supporters were also delighted by the victory and hopeful that it could be a sign of things to come under their new manager.
