‘Massive statement’ – Many Birmingham fans react as transfer links emerge to 29-year-old

Birmingham City are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer and attentions have seemingly turned to recently released Fulham stopper Marcus Bettinelli, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.

The 29-year-old spent made over 100 league appearances for the Cottagers during his career but found himself way down the pecking order last season due to the arrival of Frenchman Alphonse Areola, so he made a switch to Middlesbrough on a season-long loan.

Bettinelli played 27 Championship games for Boro and whilst he wasn’t overly convincing at times, he still provides a decent level of experience and Lee Bowyer is looking for someone to battle with Neil Etheridge for the number one jersey this coming season.

The Phillippines international has recently been hospitalised with COVID so Bowyer’s desperation for a new stopper has grown, and the club have had Wolves goalkeeper Matija Sarkic training with them to run the rule over him ahead of a potential loan deal.

Nottingham Forest were interested in Bettinelli but they opted for American ‘keeper Ethan Horvath instead, which has left the Blues in the clear to try and bring him to St. Andrews – this is what the Birmingham fans are saying about a potential deal.
