Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has taken to Instagram to express an apology to Cardiff fans for his team's performance against Reading.

The Bluebirds fell to a 3-0 defeat and were outplayed across the pitch, despite the fact Reading were winless coming into the match.

The winger also assured fans of the reason why he went straight down the tunnel upon being substituted, stating that he required treatment whilst reassuring fans that he always appreciates their support.

Fans have responded well to the post, commending the 27-year-old on his honesty and willingness to admit he and his team weren't good enough, but others have demanded he put it right in their next match, against Huddersfield Town on Wednesday.

Cardiff sit 19th after two defeats from three Championship games, but the mid-week match provides them with an opportunity to record back-to-back home wins.

Here are some of the reactions from Cardiff fans to Mendez-Laing's post.

je33e_boi06: "Massive respect! Only one who said sorry for that terrible performance."

ccfcawaydays: "Make up for it on Wednesday."

_.burto._: "Fair play Mendez, to come out and say that shows real courage, hopefully all of us at the club wake up and start pulling out performances."

nathan.evans.01: "No need to apologise bro, if you're not fully fit and all the subs used it’s what you expect, on to Wednesday see you soon bro."

rhys.muttonen: "Well said Mendez, quality player and hope you recover soon."

dai_villalobos_: "You weren’t yourself mate, not your fault. Chin up you're one of our key players onwards and upwards."

lipcat: "Well done for the apology but people paid damn good money to travel up there yesterday. Personally I can handle losing but yesterday the towel was thrown in after pack went off and what grates on me is the total lack of effort and willingness to fight til the death.... Put it right starting Wednesday.... Speedy recovery."
