After a successful season last year which saw the Gas achieve promotion to League One on the final day of the season, Joey Barton is looking to strengthen his Bristol Rovers side to prepare for the league above.

Rovers will want to ensure they can stay up in the league next season and push on rather than fighting at the wrong end of the season and they may have received a massive boost in doing so with Anthony Evans having signed a new contract.

Last season, the 23-year-old got 11 goals in all competitions and the amount of promise he showed is reflected in the fact his new deal keeps him at the club until 2025.

With that in mind, we asked FLW's Bristol Rovers fan pundit Charlie Hayne for his verdict on the new deal: "Evans signing a new deal was really important. It was basically like a new signing.

"It took a while, Barton gave a time frame of seven to ten days but it took nearly 30 days.

"But yeah, amazing that he's signed. A massive, massive player for us.

"Bought him in on a free and to get 11 goals and 14 assists in your first season considering the season before he's not even got over two or three goals, is crazy.

"So yeah, massive Evans signing a new deal."

The Verdict:

As Charlie says, this is brilliant news for Bristol Rovers and should have a really positive impact on their season next year.

Last year, the young player provided plenty for the attacking efforts of the team and he will look to do more of the same in the league above now.

Of course, he will have to adapt but he seems to have really excelled with Rovers so far. He has plenty of potential and will no doubt go on to be a big player in the side yet again.
