Sunderland may end up losing some key players this summer to higher-placed clubs, but one of the stars of the 2020-21 season looks set to stay at the Black Cats next season.
Charlie Wyke, Denver Hume and Luke O’Nien’s contracts are all set to expire and they could all depart, with Wyke looking the most likely at this stage with the likes of Celtic set to make a move.
One other player who has an expiring deal is veteran winger Aiden McGeady, who was brought in from the cold by Lee Johnson when he was appointed as the new head coach in December.
McGeady was snapped up by Simon Grayson in the summer of 2017 but his seven goals that season couldn’t help keep the Black Cats in the Championship – despite being on a hefty wage he remained in League One and scored 11 times under Jack Ross as they lost out in the play-off final that season.
The Ireland international was not fancied by Phil Parkinson though and he was eventually exiled from the senior squad, going on loan to Charlton Athletic for the second half of the 2019-20 campaign.
Sunderland quiz: One question about every player in the Black Cats’ first-team – Can you score 100% on this?
Since Johnson brought him back into the fold though the 35-year-old has been a revelation, assisting 14 goals in 29 League One games, but with the club faltering in the play-offs it was unknown as to whether or not they could afford to keep McGeady next season.
But the Sunderland Echo have reported that a deal is close to keep McGeady on Wearside next season and there’s general happiness at the news from Black Cats fans.
McGeady staying will be massive, no let’s get some pace around and up top with him https://t.co/bon1XWq1i8

Good news this. Wyke the worst player to score 30+ ever. Get Hume tied down and go out and sort out the rest of the team. https://t.co/QS0YY6FAxY

Looks like McGeady is staying at SAFC which is I’m happy with that. #safc

McGeady signing a new deal is fine provided he isn't our 'go to' player.
I envision him being a player we use against the weaker sides who have full backs who can't cope with a step over. He shouldn't be the first name on the teamsheet.

Excellent news now let’s add more players in the same bracket as this lad and pace in the team for next season
