Mason Burstow from Charlton to Chelsea: Is it a good move? Will he start? What does he offer?

Mason Burstow completed a life-changing Deadline Day move from Charlton Athletic to Chelsea for an undisclosed fee with his contract situation also not revealed.

The 18-year-old has scored six goals in seven starts in all competitions this season and will remain with the Addicks on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Burstow, who failed a trial at the Chelsea academy a few years ago, was picked up by Charlton from Maidstone United in 2020 and his first team opportunities predominantly came in the Papa John’s Trophy initially.

An injury to Jayden Stockley has seen further minutes available at the top of the pitch, which saw the 18-year-old manage two league starts in the recent weeks.

Is it a good move?

It feels a little early in his development to be jumping ship after just two league starts in senior professional football.

However, Chelsea have built an excellent reputation for providing players with the right pathway to pursue a successful career in the senior game in recent years.

It will be interesting to see what path is chosen for him beyond this season, with a chance Burstow is merely a regular for one of the club’s youth sides or a loan move elsewhere may be preferred.

Will he start?

In such a small sample size of senior football it is hard to determine what exactly Burstow’s flaw and ceiling are however, the 18-year-old has looked like the Addicks’ most dangerous attacking threat of late and really announced himself in a substitute appearance at Gresty Road.

The Addicks lost 2-1 to Crewe Alexandra in mid January, with Burstow halving the deficit late on, but it was his assist for a last gasp disallowed goal that really caught the eye.

Albie Morgan floated a hopeful ball into the area and Burstow was able to hold off a defender and chest the ball into the path of Elliot Lee, whose deflected shot ended up in the net, only for Jonathan Leko to be ruled offside.

The speed of thought and deft piece of control from Burstow set him apart from just the average lively young striker, who may be thrown on from the bench by many EFL clubs with not a lot to play for in the second half of the season.

Quiz: Have any of these 28 ex-Charlton Athletic players ever played for Crystal Palace or Millwall?

What does he offer?

Burstow is very physically developed for his age, his aerial ability is very advanced at this point, not only a threat offensively, his last three goals for the Addicks have been headers, but a key player in his own box defending set pieces.

At 18, it is hard to rule out any position changes, Burstow was signed from Maidstone United having played mainly as a defender and could go on to revolutionise his game further now on the books at Chelsea.
