Martyn Waghorn has expressed his gratitude to the Derby County supporters following his move to Coventry City.

The 31-year-old completed a permanent switch to the Sky Blues on Friday evening after penning a two-year contract at the Ricoh Arena.

That move came as a result of Waghorn coming to the end of his contract at Pride Park, meaning that he was available to leave the club on a free transfer as he completed his move to the midlands outfit.

As a result the striker's three-year spell with the club has come to an end.

During that time Waghorn has built quite a rapport with supporters and taking to social media after completing his move to the Ricoh Arena, the player believes that it was 'a fitting way to end' his time at the club.

Taking to Twitter, Waghorn said: "Would like to say a massive thank you to everyone at Derby County for the past 3 years.

"We had highs and lows but as this photo was my last in a derby shirt so it seems a fitting way to end. It was a crazy last day and glad it kept the club in the league.

"Huge thanks to all the fans who supported me and those associated to Derby for the good times we had.  Myself and my family loved our time and want to wish every one good luck for the season ahead."

The verdict

I don't think there's much doubt that it was the right time for Martyn Waghorn to move on.

While matters off the pitch certainly aren't going to plan, on the pitch it has felt that things are going a little bit stale at Pride Park and that's why changes will need to be made.

When it's allowed, Derby need to bring in some fresh faces for the future and offloading the 31-year-old was probably the first step in being able to afford to do that.

That said, it's clear that Waghorn was passionate about the club and that enthusiasm will certainly be missed.
