Derby County forward Martyn Waghorn has admitted that whilst his side have struggled for consistency during the opening two months of the season, they are determined to build upon their recent successes in the Championship.

After going seven games without a victory in all competitions, the Rams sealed a vital three points against Birmingham City on September 28th.

Although they were then forced to settle for a draw in their clash with Barnsley, Derby returned to winning ways last Saturday by defeating Luton Town at Pride Park.

After a Matty Pearson own-goal gave the Rams the lead in the 11th minute, Tom Lawrence secured victory for his side in the second-half as his effort sailed past goalkeeper Simon Sluga.

Whilst Waghorn did not have a major impact during this particular fixture, he has nevertheless illustrated some real signs of promise for Derby this year.

Having already found the back of the net on four occasions in the Championship, the forward will be determined to build upon this success over the coming months.

Speaking to The Derby County Show about the Rams' season to date, Waghorn gave an honest assessment.

"I would say that we have been inconsistent. We know that we could have picked up more points along the way but towards the last few weeks we are unbeaten.

"We could have been in a better situation but in the grand scheme of things, in this division it is about putting runs together and not dropping points.

"We are five unbeaten going into the break so it's a steady run of fixtures. You take the [international] break as it comes, it gives is a chance to reflect on what we can do better. Set pieces have been a bit of an Achilles heel for us but it's something to work on.

"It's a chance for the boys to have a break, get ready and go again."

The Verdict

Whilst Derby have experienced somewhat of an underwhelming start to life under manager Phillip Cocu, there is no reason why they cannot go on to achieve a relative amount of success in the Championship this season.

With the likes of Chris Martin, Waghorn and Jack Marriott all capable of producing some real moments of magic up-front, it would not be at all surprising if the Rams push on after the international break.

Waghorn recognises that and the fans will appreciate the honest message and it's now down to the players to kick-on.
