It has been a blistering start to the season for Coventry City proving themselves to be the surprise package in the Championship.

What a feel good story with the club finally returning home and playing at the CBS Arena once again. Callum O'Hare and Viktor Gyokeres may be taking the bulk of the plaudits but to a man they have been outstanding and produced a performance for the ages in thrashing Fulham 4-1 on Saturday.

In picking the Sky Blues' best starting XI this season we have made three alterations from the side that started against the Cottagers.

Martyn Waghorn, Gustavo Hamer and Jamie Allen come in for Matthew Godden, Liam Kelly and Ben Sheaf.

Todd Kane also misses out, the former Chelsea man has been impressive at right wing back in his limited opportunities this term but Fankaty Dabo gets the nod having played a lot more minutes.

Time will tell if the Sky Blues can build a realistic play-off push but they have to eradicate performances like last Wednesday's 5-0 loss at Luton Town if they stand a chance.

Ian Maatsen is thriving at left wing back on loan from Chelsea and the 19-year-old will be hoping to add to his first goal for the club, and thunderbolt at that, after the international break.

The main reason Martyn Waghorn is preferred to Matthew Godden in this XI is Championship experience. Godden has been a consistent performer for Coventry in recent years but does not provide the all-round threat that Waghorn does.

The former Derby County striker is better molded to company Gyokeres for his creative abilities. It is important that a striking duo offer different types of threats and though Godden performed excellently against Fulham and assisted the Swedes second goal, Waghorn is a more reliable option at second tier level.
