Everton manager Roberto Martinez has admitted he was impressed with Reading, as his side were forced to come from behind to beat the Royals in the third round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.

Steve Clarke's side took the lead against the Premier League side in the first half through Nick Blackman's seventh goal of the season, as the in-form striker volleyed into the bottom corner.

However, the Toffees put in a much better second half, Ross Barkley firing home a shot from a corner, before Gerard Deulofeu scored a stunning goal from a free kick, about 30 yards away from goal.

Despite losing, the home side impressed manager Martinez, who hailed their first half display, and a defensive resolve that made it hard for the visitors to create clear cut chances.

He told the Liverpool Echo: 'Reading started really, really well, they were really bright.

'They had a bright tempo, were very brave and a had very good defensive high line that we couldn't find that extra pass to open them up. Then they scored a very good goal.

'We had to change it tactically in the second half, and it was a little bit easier for us in that formation to have that extra pass and penetrate a little bit more and we took control of the game and deservedly got through.'

The Royals have had an excellent start to the season, but perhaps face their hardest test of the season this weekend when they face a strong Burnley side at Turf Moor.
