Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler has revealed that West Bromwich Albion's 2-0 win against Manchester City during their 'great escape' from relegation in 2004/05 is his favourite memory at the Hawthorns.

Tyler's career in commentary has stretched into six decades and seen him cover some of the biggest moments in English football's recent history.

With fixtures currently suspended, Sky Sports 'voice of football' has provided fans with a virtual visit to various English grounds – revealing a commentator's perspective and his own stance on multiple stadiums.

Today, he turned his focus to the Hawthorns and when pressed on his favourite moment at the stadium, referenced the Baggies 2-0 win over City in their 'great escape' in 2004/05.

West Brom were bottom of the Premier League at Christmas but, led by Bryan Robson, managed to secure survival on the final day of the season.

Tyler was not at the Hawthorns on that day but he was there in January that year to see the Baggies, who had won just once all year, beat City 2-0.

On the Sky Sports website, he noted: "West Brom had won only one of their 23 Premier League games to this point. They had amassed only 13 points.

"Now they were at home to Kevin Keegan's Manchester City and they beat them 2-0. Kevin Campbell who had just been acquired from Everton, was only 11 days short of his 35th birthday. The veteran striker marked his home debut with a sweetly struck low shot that sped past David James following a Martin Albrechtsen cross.

"Bryan Robson had never lost to City in nine Manchester derbies as a player and he had two United connections in his line-up that day, Jonathan Greening and Manchester-born Ronnie Wallwork.

"With 10 potentially nervy minutes left the Baggies secured their second goal and only their second win. A deep cross from Greening was headed back from beyond the far post by the burly Geoff Horsfield and Wallwork applied the crucial touch."

At the moment, it looks as though the Hawthorns could be hosting Premier League football against next season as the Baggies are second in the Championship with nine games remaining.

If and when the season will resume is unknown but West Brom look like one of the frontrunners to secure automatic promotion.

The Verdict

It's interesting to hear Tyler recall a vital victory and in a famous Baggies season.

This will no doubt bring back some good memories for fans of the Midlands club, who secured a dramatic escape from relegation on the final day of the campaign.

The Hawthorns faithful will be hoping that Tyler is commentating on more Premier League games including West Brom next season.
