Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler has revealed that Sunderland's victory against Manchester City in 2012 is his favourite memory of commentating at the Stadium of Light.

During the delay to the season, Tyler has been taking fans on virtual tours of some of the country's most notable stadiums and revealing what it's like to commentate at the ground.

Today, he turned his attention to the Stadium of Light and revealed that the Black Cats 1-0 win over City on New Year's Day in 2012 is his favourite memory from the ground.

The Citizens arrived in the North East as league leaders, hoping to take advantage of Manchester United's loss to Blackburn Rovers and extend their lead at the top of the table.

They came unstuck against Martin O'Neill's side, however, with Ji Dong-won scoring a dramatic late winner following a game that had seen chances spurned by both sides.

On the Sky Sports website, Tyler explained why the game was his favourite memory at the Stadium of Light.

He said: "Martin O'Neill had galvanised his team into a superb defensive performance to keep out the side which ended the season as champions, Manchester City.

"There were 20 seconds left on the clock when the manager recognised that there was time for one more counter-attack and his team had the ball. O'Neill frantically waved his players forward.

"Looking back, the calmest man in the ground seemed to be the man who had the ball, Ji Dong-Won on as a substitute striker.

"As City defenders backed off, the South Korean exchanged passes with Stephane Sessegnon. When confronted by Joe Hart, he strolled past the City and England keeper and won the game for Sunderland. It really was Ji-whiz!

"Right from the early years, I have often referred to the Premier League as the league of late goals. We have all seen so many games where a decisive moment has been in a dying moment. This was right up there in that category. 'It ain't over till it's over,' I think I yelled."

Things didn't work out for the South Korean striker at the Black Cats, with the 28-year-old scoring just twice in 28 appearances for the club, but he will likely always be a popular figure among fans for his part in that victory.

The Verdict

Given Tyler's huge wealth of experience covering Premier League games, it is interesting to get some insight into his favourite memory at the Stadium of Light.

The dramatic late victory will likely be a fond memory for Black Cats fans, particularly as it came before their tumble down the leagues in the late 2010s.

They'll be hoping that moments like that in the Premier League return to the Stadium of Light soon.
