New Nottingham Forest boss Martin O'Neill has confirmed that he wants to bring Roy Keane to the City Ground as his assistant manager.

The pair worked together for Ireland over the past few years and helped take the country to Euro 2016.

However, more recently he was involved in some heated arguments with several players, including Harry Arter, which saw the midfielder pull out of a squad.

Nevertheless, O'Neill was quoted by reporter Laurie Whitwell that he values what the former Manchester United player offers and hopes he will join him in the East Midlands.

"He was a great asset to me at Ireland, we had some really great days, tough to handle but you know that with him. It’s what makes him special."

The new manager is a favourite at Forest as he played for the legendary Brian Clough sides that won back-to-back European Cups.

And, Keane also knows what the club is all about, having spent three seasons with the Reds from 1990 before making the move to Old Trafford.

It's not clear when the new assistant could be confirmed, with O'Neill set for his first game in charge this weekend as Forest host Bristol City.

The Verdict

If you appoint a manager like O'Neill then you have to let him take full control and back him all the way.

Therefore, if he wants to work with Keane then it's down to the board to deliver that even if he has been a divisive figure over the years.

The latest comments suggest a deal is inevitable and it will be interesting to see how it works out for the pair at club level.
