Nottingham Forest are ready to make a transfer bid for Stoke City midfielder, James McClean according to Football Insider.

This deal won't come as a surprise as McClean has worked under Martin O'Neill before when the pair were representing the Irish national team.

A well placed source has revealed to the Football Insider, that McClean would be keen to link up with his former manager, after struggling to make an impact with the Potters this season.

McClean has only scored one goal in 26 appearances for Stoke this season, and has been one of a number of players that have been underperforming this season for the Potters.

The winger has had to be content with a place on the substitutes bench since Nathan Jones took over at Stoke, despite McClean being a regular under Gary Rowett before he was sacked from the managerial post.

It's likely that Martin O'Neill is likely to make new signings this month as he looks to strengthen the current playing squad in order for them to break into the top six, with Forest just outside the play-offs.

There is a chance that the newly appointed Stoke boss could choose to cash in on the Irish international, as he looks to make funds available to add new additions to his squad so they are better equipped to fire themselves up the table.

The Verdict:

This is an interesting potential deal.

McClean has struggled to make a notable impact with Stoke, and could be tempted by a fresh start with Nottingham Forest this month.

If he can find his feet early, then it would be a good bit of business, but surely there are better options out there for the Reds?
