Daniel James was undoubtedly one of the breakthrough talents in the Championship during the 2018/19 campaign.

He was handed his league debut under Graham Potter with Swansea City in the early months of the campaign with his electric pace making him an instant hit.

As the season progressed his stock began to rise higher and higher with his departure from the Liberty seeming more a matter of when than if.

And it was finally confirmed earlier this week when the Welshman put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Manchester United.

It marks an incredible rise for the 21-year-old and many Championship fans will be watching on to see how he does at Old Trafford.

But what can we make of this deal?

Here to offer his six point opinion is FLW writer Louie Chandler...

Just how good a signing is this?

"It is an excellent signing and a refreshing one, too.

"It seems like some genuine thought has gone into the move. James has gone to be a United player for the next decade, rather than just to shift a few shirts like previous arrivals.

"Will this signal a complete change in approach from the club? I doubt it. But it is certainly promising."

Is a five-year deal right?

"Absolutely it is.

"James is 21 so tying him down immediately to a long-term deal is the right way to go. There is a good chance he could take quite a while to adapt but I have no doubts that eventually he will.

"Had they only offered him a two or three-year deal they would have seriously risked losing him had he shone from the start."

What do Manchester United fans have to look forward to?

"Direct and thrilling attacks.

"United thrived on the counter attack last season under Solskjaer and if that is their tactic for the coming campaign, James will fit in perfectly.

"His electric pace shot him to fame last season and even the best defences in the Premier League are going to struggle badly to deal with it."

What are the biggest drawbacks to the deal?

"You would have to say the step up.

"James has had one season of first team football and that came in the Championship.

"So, although he is clearly an exciting talent, patience may well be needed from his teammates, manager and fans during the opening months of the campaign."

Will he be a regular starter?

"I see no reason he couldn't be.

"United have struggled to establish who their first-choice wingers are over the past few seasons so there is no question that James will get his chance.

"If he can impress I think Ole will have no hesitation in making him a starter."

Who will be fearing his arrival most?

"Anthony Martial could be rather worried.

"Despite bursting onto the scene, the Frenchman has struggled to hold down a spot in the starting XI with question marks still remaining over his favoured position.

"With the likes of Rashford and Lukaku to compete with down the middle, James's arrival simply gives him another headache over maintaining his spot on the wing."
