Markus Schopp reacts when asked about his future at Barnsley amid growing pressure

Published

Barnsley manager Markus Schopp has suggested that he is not the right person to comment over his potential future with the Tykes and is instead concentrating on doing his best for his players.

It has been a very difficult start to life at Oakwell for Schopp and the Tykes have managed to secure just one win in their first 12 Championship matches during his tenure to date.

The Tykes suffered a fourth successive defeat in the Championship on Saturday with them falling to a narrow 1-0 loss away at Reading. That result leaves them still inside the relegation zone and they are in much need of a result soon to avoid slipping further into trouble.

Barnsley travel to Middlesbrough tomorrow with Schopp under increasing pressure to turn things around. It was reported by the Sunday Mirror (17/10, p74) that the Tykes are already considering replacing their manager with Neil Redfearn a potential candidate to come in and lead them through the season.

Brad Collins arrived at Oakwell on the expiration of his contract at Chelsea. True or False?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of their clash with Middlesbrough, Schopp insisted that he is not the person to ask over his future with the club.

He said: “I am not the right person to talk about that. I am here and want to do my best.”

While Schopp also did insist that he has the belief that his side can still manage to turn things around and start getting some much-needed results.

The verdict

This is a very difficult situation for Schopp and it is difficult to see him surviving much longer if his side do fall to another defeat at Middlesbrough tomorrow evening.

Something has to change very quickly for the Tykes if they are going to have any chance of surviving the drop this season. There is no doubt that they have an abundance of talent within their squad and that was shown by them reaching the play-offs last term.

These are the sorts of comments you get from a manager that knows they are under major pressure and Schopp will be aware that he is hanging on by a thread at the moment at Barnsley with the way that results are progressing.

However, a win against Middlesbrough might well be something that can inspire a turnaround in their campaign and hand them the chance to start climbing the table.
