Coventry City manager Mark Robins has revealed that Marcel Hilssner is close to securing an exit from the club.

Signed by the Sky Blues in 2020, the attacking midfielder would have been hoping to make a positive impact during his time in the West Midlands.

However, after failing to make any inroads on Coventry's starting eleven last season, he was loaned out by the club to Oldham Athletic during the second half of the 2020/21 campaign.

The 26-year-old went on to feature on 20 occasions for the Latics in the fourth-tier before returning to the Championship outfit last year.

Given that he has yet to make an appearance for Coventry this season, Hilssner is unlikely to be included in the club's match-day squad for their meeting with Queens Park Rangers this afternoon.

The Sky Blues could move up to eighth in the second-tier standings today if they seal all three points in-front of their supporters at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Ahead of this fixture, Robins has shared an update on Hilssner's future.

Speaking to Coventry Live about whether the attacking midfielder was close to leaving, the Sky Blues boss said: "I think so. You'll just have to stay tuned. There may be something happening there in the next 24/48 hours.

"There are things inching closer for him in Germany, I think. I am just waiting for confirmation on that."

The Verdict

It could be argued that both parties may end up benefitting from Hilssner's departure.

Whilst the attacking midfielder could potentially join a team in Germany who are willing to provide him with the game-time that he needs to revive his career, Coventry could use the money freed up from their wage bill to draft in some reinforcements.

Having already bolstered his squad by securing the services of Jake Bidwell on a permanent deal, it will be intriguing to see whether Robins opts to make any more moves in the current transfer window.

If Coventry's current set of players are able to maintain their fitness as well their form in the coming months, it wouldn't be at all surprising if the club secures a top-six finish in the Championship this season.
