Mark Robins speaks out on recent Coventry City transfer decision

Mark Robins has discussed the reason for Coventry City’s latest signing joining the club.

Jake Bidwell arrived from Swansea City this week, and Robins is expecting him to be a fine addition to his side.

Robins explained why the player was signed to an unusually long contract, given it was unexpected that Coventry would even do any business this month at all.

“He’s a player we like, obviously, and it came about when Chris Badlan brought it to our attention that he was going to be available, which was a surprise in the first instance, but I am happy that it happened,” said Robins, via the Coventry Telegraph

“We weren’t doing anything.

“That was the standpoint from the club, that we weren’t able to do anything, but you have to be nimble and have to always try to be in the mix if it’s something that can affect you in a positive way, and obviously Jake becoming available was something we felt we had to do, and we have sort of balanced things with Tyler going out to Portsmouth.

“So in terms of the finance I have been able to make that work.”

Which club was Simon Moore released from in the summer?

Robins went on to compliment Robins style of play, comparing him to a “Rolls-Royce” and claiming that his movement on the pitch is very good.

Bidwell joined on a free transfer due to the imminent expiration of his contract with Swansea in the Summer.

The wing-back has signed a three and a half-year contract with the club and could be in line to make his debut this coming weekend.

Bidwell will be competing with home-grown talent Jordan Shipley for the position in the side, which Robins will be hoping raises performance levels from both players in order to earn their spot in the team.

Coventry compete against Queens Park Rangers this weekend, with both sides hoping to continue their recent winning ways. QPR are fourth in the table, with Robins’ side sat in ninth.

The Verdict

Bidwell is a strong addition to the Coventry side and a great example of being prepared to move in the January market when the right player comes along.

It can be easy to get suckered into signing players for the sake of it, but this shows that well timed deals can be done mid-season.

Bidwell will likely go straight into the Coventry side this weekend, and his experience with Swansea could be very important.

His former side made the play-off finals last season, and having someone with that knowledge of what it takes to get there could galvanise the dressing room.
