Coventry City manager Mark Robins has admitted that he is struggling to land a new centre-back in the January transfer window.

The Sky Blues have already landed two individuals so far this month, with wing-backs Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Josh Wilson-Esbrand arriving on loan from Arsenal and Manchester City respectively.

More new faces could be coming soon with the confirmation that Doug King's takeover of the club has successfully gone through, but up to now, Robins has failed to land a player in perhaps the one position he needs to look at most.

Callum Doyle and Jonathan Panzo both arrived on loan during the summer but they were acquired before the sale of Dominic Hyam to Blackburn Rovers, in a move that left Robins short at the back.

He has been struggling even more since December due to Kyle McFadzean going down with a long-term injury, meaning that a fresh centre-half is now a priority.

Speaking about his efforts to get one of those in, Robins told CoventryLive: “The centre-half is proving pretty difficult at the moment although we have identified a couple of targets but we will have to wait and see.

"But the numbers aren’t great because there are people that needed a rest and needed to come out for the FA Cup – the mental side of things as much as the physical side.”

The Verdict

Now that the takeover of Doug King has been finalised, perhaps now there will be some positive movement on the centre-back front.

It's pretty apparent that the Sky Blues need a permanent replacement for Hyam, but those kind of deals are more difficult to do mid-season when teams do not want to lose players sometimes.

Robins could turn to the loan market again, but he already has two centre-backs at the club temporarily, so you'd expect a permanent option to be sourced.

King's backing could now give Robins renewed hope, but they must get someone in sooner rather than later due to McFadzean's absence.
